For text fields, when you choose is or contains, you can use wildcards ? and * to match one or many characters, respectively. So, for example, Br?stol will match both Bristol and Brystol, and Camb*e will match Cambridge, Cambridgeshire and Camborne.

If you choose matches, what you type is interpreted as a regular expression; for example, L[oi]nd.*um will match both Lindum and Londinium.
